The streets of St. Simons Island are lined with dedicated Bulldog fans. Seas of red and black cover the village shops, restaurants, and beaches.

Hundreds of fans turned out last night for the Hodnett Cooper book signing event with Vince Dooley at the Village Villas. The former University of Georgia head coach and athletic director autographed an assortment of memorabilia, including hats, sweatshirts, artwork, videos, and photographs. Additionally, Coach Dooley presented his newest book, Dooley: My 40 Years at Georgia.

Also in attendance were several pet bulldogs, including Justice Potter from Brunswick, Georgia. Justice, incidentally, made the front page of this morning’s Brunswick News!

Thank you to everyone who helped plan, promote, and attend this wonderful event.

Annie Oakley is the best shot around, and she manages to support her little brother and sisters by selling the game she hunts. Colonel Buffalo Bill Persuades her to join his Wild West Show. It only takes one glance for her to fall head over heels for dashing shooting ace, Frank Butler, who headlines the show. The rousing, sure-fire finale hits the mark every time in a testament to the power of female ingenuity. Every song a hit!

The American Cancer Society South Atlantic Division of Relay For Life held their annual Summit on October 17-18 in Atlanta.  In attendance were 550  American Cancer Society Volunteers and Staff Members representing Relay Events from the state of Georgia.  160 plus events have been held throughout the state over the past year.  Volunteers and staff members celebrated the great work Georgia is doing in the fight to find a cure for cancer.

Some exciting news from the summit about Glynn County’s Relay For Life and the State of Georgia:   Glynn County’s Relay For Life rates #3 in the nation for money raised in our population category (65,000 – 74,999).  During the past 14 years of Relay in Glynn County the  event has been ranked within the top ten for money raised.  Another proud achievement is having 8 teams to raise $10,000+ in the event. (Other events had 1 or 2 teams to achieve that level).   This year Georgia has raised more than $22,000,000.  Each day in our country 90,000 lives are being saved.  We are making a notable difference in this fight.  The 2009 Glynn County Relay For Life Event will be held April 24-25 at the Brunswick Exchange Club Fairgrounds.  I encourage you to visit www.relay.org and www.cancer.org to learn how to become more involved with the fight against cancer.  Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

Friday. October 24, 2008 at 8:00 PM at the Glynn Academy Auditorium [Tickets]

You will want to dance in the aisles to the music of Pavlo, a dynamic composer, guitarist, and singer, who has created a unique style best described as “Mediterranean music”.  His mix of the sounds of Greek Bouzouki with Flamenco and Latin influences has proven a winning combination, which Pavlo says was the “natural progression” of combining his Classical and Flamenco training with his passion for Greek and European sounds.

Student Outreach Concerts:

To promote music appreciation among young people, the association will be presenting additional Pavlo performances for about 1,400 elementary, middle school and home school students at the Glynn Academy Auditorium earlier in the day.

You are probably wondering, why “through the back door” for a title?  It’s a term that implies the unknown or something not advertised to the public.  My name is Diane Bondurant and I was born and raised in Glynn County.  I don’t just live here, I have a great deal of curiosity and interest concerning what is going on in my home town.  Through these postings, I hope to introduce My Island and its laid-back lifestyle to all who participate.  Life here in Coastal Georgia is considerably slower and more comfortable than other areas in the US.  Neighbors know each other and, for the most part, look out for each other.  We are skeptical of change, especially if this change alters what has been evolving for the past 100 years or so.  Our wonderful Island community has its own unique personality. Our Village has the cozy feel of long ago Main Street. It leads you out to the Pier where you will find people gathering almost any time of day or evening.  You will not find another place quite like this Island.  We do not resemble the islands off North or South Carolina or Florida.

In the coming weeks and months, my goal is to familiarize everyone with this precious little island and ultimately to, in some way, help preserve it for the future and for all to enjoy.

The sixth annual Oak Grove Island Yacht Club Poker Run and Fish Fry was again a huge success. The run to five marinas on calm waters under clear Georgia skies was awesome.

For those who are not familiar with a “poker run”, the rules are simple. All boats have a morning start at the Oak Grove Island Marina and are off to pick up one card that is sealed in an envelope at each of the five marinas. Each person on the boat has a chance to play a hand. At the end, judges open each person’s group of five envelopes to see who comes up with the best poker hand and, therefore, becomes a winner.

The poker run is followed by a fish fry put on by the Yacht Club and is open to all Oak Grove Island property owners. The food was excellent with plenty for all. Thanks to the many hardworking volunteers.

Fall is definitely a perfect time for boating activities in south Georgia. The weather is beautiful and the scenery is fantastic. Soon the “snow birds” will be cruising down the IntraCoastal Waterway from the North, heading for winter “nesting” in Florida and the Caribbean. It’s a “migration” that the First Mate and I would like to join one day. However, one wonders if there is as nice a place as Oak Grove Island at which to spend time.

Hodnett Cooper is very proud to announce our new web site. hodnettcooper.com. Same address, but a new design, new content, easier navigation and this new blog!

We have already started with a few posting to the blog, but we’re just getting started. Soon you will be reading about all the happenings of real estate in our area… from the inside. We’ll be giving you all the information we can to make you a better buyer, seller, investor, renter, vacationer and business person.

We have a variety of experts in their field ready to help you with what they know best. And it extends beyond just real estate. Want to know about golfing in the area? We got someone for that. Want to know about home owners’ associations? We got someone for that. Want to know about club memberships? We got someone for that, too.

Here’s what we need from you. In order to make this a truly interactive blog, we need you to ask your questions and post your statements. We’ll then post the answers in future blog posts. Hopefully we can get a real discussion started. All you have to do is click on the word “comments” (or “no comments” if you’re the first) under each post or click the title of the post and you can post your question or comment. As long as it isn’t degrading to someone or inflammatory, we’ll try to answer it the best we can.

Thanks!
