Three of Us

Three of Us

What began as an obscure duo (Bill & Bo) playing mostly for fun at small coffeehouses and local restaurants has evolved into what many are calling the best trio in the Golden Isles.  This popular group performs a myriad of pop and folk-type cover tunes from the 60’s and 70’s, specializing in two and three part harmonies in the style of the Everly Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles and Crosby, Stills & Nash.  They play several Jimmy Buffett and Bob Dylan tunes as well, and they throw in some songs made popular by Linda Ronstadt, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and many others.

The group features solid musicianship with an emphasis on tight vocal harmonies and many years of musical experience.  Bill has been performing professionally for over 30 years, and Bo has been playing for over 45 years.  Marie, who joined the group about a year ago, has been playing professionally for over 15 years and has become a real focal point for their performances. With her awesome bongo playing, stellar vocals and an arsenal of percussion instruments she keeps the audience wondering what she’ll do next.  This band is just plain fun to watch as well as hear!

They play songs that you grew up with, tunes that bring back memories for most of their audience.  Bo is also a songwriter, working on some original tunes that will (hopefully) appear on an upcoming CD this year.  Bill also writes a weekly internet newsletter called the “Golden Isles Music Scene”, which tells local subscribers where and when they can find live music in and around the Golden Isles.  His goal is to promote live music to the local folks who will appreciate and support it.  It’s a free service, available through email… if you’d like to subscribe, just send an email request to Bill Townsend at elaineandbill@bellsouth.net and he will add you to his growing database, now estimated at over 500 local music lovers.

They are currently the “house band” every Thursday night at the Village Inn & Pub, and they have played for several functions on Sea Island as well as other local restaurants and country clubs.  They have also played for other private events as well, including wedding rehearsal dinners, reunions and some fundraisers.  Visit their website at: http://www.threeofus.coastalviewpoint.com.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we in the United States have much to be thankful for, and when giving thanks, near the top of my list of “things we are thankful for” are the freedoms we enjoy as an American citizen.

For more than two hundred years, in wartimes and during times of peace, the brave men and women of our armed forces have protected us, our freedoms and our security, and for that we are forever grateful. They sacrifice their time, their energy and sometimes their lives — for us and for our country. For that we give thanks.

We at Hodnett Cooper Vacation Rentals salute the dedicated men and women of our armed services and honor their service with a special rate. Now through February 28, 2009, we are offering a $120 per night rate in select oceanfront condominiums (plus taxes and fees) to all active military personnel. A two-night minimum stay is required.

As you enjoy turkey and dressing, celebrate with your family and watch football this Thanksgiving, please remember to give thanks for all of our troops, past and present, that give us the freedoms we enjoy.

You know the Holidays have arrived in the Golden Isles when the temperature drops below 80, and Jekyll Island announces their annual Holiday Island. Jekyll will be ringing in this year’s Holiday Season with a Christmas Tree Lighting Festival on November 29. Come tour the historic district of Jekyll Island and the Jekyll Island Club Hotel as you have never seen it before…with a full Holiday wardrobe! This year’s festivities will begin at 4:30pm and continue until the Christmas tree lighting and fireworks finale at 7:30pm. Bring the whole family and prepare to be entertained by historical reenactors, musical ensembles, and local dance ensembles. The
kids may enjoy a hay ride, pictures with Santa, and did I mention SNOW in South Georgia! This coastal tradition is a great way to start the Holiday Season, and I look forward to seeing you there!

The Hodnett Cooper real estate professionals are in the Holiday spirit early this year, helping the Salvation Army with its annual Christmas Kettle Donation Drive.  At the Winn Dixie on St. Simons Island, Carol Ann Spell, Laura de Martino, Nancy Norwood, and Guerry Norwood braved a windy 40 degree day to welcome shoppers to the store and encourage donations small and large.  On the Mainland, Jerry Rhyne and Kate Pontello dispensed Holiday greetings to shoppers taking advantage of Belk’s early holiday sales and collected generous contributions for the Salvation Army’s Christmas missions.

The traditional red kettle is an integral part of the Christmas scene, with millions of dollars donated each year to aid needy families, seniors and the homeless, in keeping with the spirit of the season. Donations provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and toys for families in need.  Financial assistance also helps with basic necessities, along with seasonal aid.  Families of prisoners are often included.  The Salvation Army endeavors to bring spiritual light and love to those it services at Christmas so the real meaning of the season is not forgotten.

One of the best things about living in St. Simons Island is the small-town charm and family-like atmosphere that gives us a sense of community.

Last week, much of our community gathered at the pier for a Veterans Day Parade and Memorial Service. Local school bands led automobile floats, adorned with children, business owners, former veterans, community leaders and the like, down through the Village shops and restaurants and out to the Casino lawn.  I always know it’s time to start walking towards the ocean when I hear the drums outside my office window!

Small crowds of young and old turned out with lawn chairs and picnic blankets to cheer on their loved ones and celebrate our country’s brave military. Even the Glynn County School System closed to allow students to participate in honoring our men and women in uniform.

Each year, myself and others, look forward to these wonderful community events… One of the many perks of life in a small southern town.

The St. Simons Grand

The St. Simons Grand

Sandy Fenton,  host of Let’s Talk Travel with AAA, visited Hodnett Cooper at the St. Simons Grand over the past weekend.

Every week Sandy takes her audience to a different vacation destination. A broadcast veteran for almost 30-years, Sandy Fenton created and developed “Let’s Talk Travel with AAA” in 1993. The show sold-out immediately (and continues to year after year) with AAA as the major sponsor.

A one-hour weekly travel talk show, Fenton is the host of “Let’s Talk Travel” featuring foreign & domestic vacation destinations and high level travel industry executives & professionals as in-studio guests.

Sandy is currently developing a story on vacation rentals as a hotel alternative. Fortunately, she has chosen to focus on Georgia’s beautiful coast as a destination of choice, and offered Hodnett Cooper the pleasure of
hosting her during her stay.

The Georgia Coast is the home of abundant classic southern coastal golf courses.  One of the newer ones is The Golf Club at Sanctuary Cove.  I have played there a couple of times in the last two weeks with friends and my youngest son and it is in great shape.  They have already over seeded for the fall so the greens and fairways are in great shape.

The Golf Club at Sanctuary coveThe Golf Club at Sanctuary Cove, located in Waverly, Ga., is a Love Golf Design/Fred Couples Signature course, which sits on the Golden Isles of Georgia and represents one of the top new semi-private golf facilities in the state.   The Golf Club at Sanctuary Cove is the first project for Love Golf Design that does not bear the name Davis Love III as the signature designer, but it is a partnership that blends the classic design elements from traditional golf course architecture with the techniques of modern day design.

The result at Sanctuary Cove is a par-71, 7,003-yard layout that is different from the typical residential golf experience and one that is truly unique to the area.  By working with the natural features of the land, Couples has created a course that is challenging without being penal, and one that golfers will not tire of playing.  The Golf Club at Sanctuary Cove will provide a true and fair test of golf that will appeal to players of all ability levels.
