Yesterday, 72 Louisiana Brown Pelicans were safely released from a dock in Brunswick, Georgia. The birds were rescued from the Gulf following the oil spill and flown to Brunswick via the Coast Guard. Over the past few weeks, the birds were cleaned of oil and cared for by local U.S. Fish and Wildlife personnel. Local resident, Roger Peterson, was on-hand to photograph this extraordinary event.

Local restaurant, Black Water Grill on St. Simons Island, was featured on last night’s Food Network episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives. Several local residents were featured, including Ray and Jenny Middleton. Tucked away in Redfern Village – also known as the “local’s village” – Blackwater Grill first opened its doors in December 2000. They are famous for low country, cajun and southern coastal cuisine. Featured items on last night’s show included Boudin Fritters (a twist on a Delta favorite, Blackwater’s Boudin sausage, lightly breaded and deep fried, served with a homemade spicy garlic mayonnaise) and Grouper Daufuskie (Filet of grouper, served over caramelized onions and mushrooms, topped with special Daufuskie sauce).

This Old House named Old Town Historic District, Brunswick, Georgia the “Best Old House Neighborhood” for 2010.

Excerpts from article, by Keith Pandolfi and Danielle Blundell:

721 Union Street

Located on a peninsula surrounded by tributaries to the Atlantic, the unspoiled coastal community of Brunswick offers laid-back neighborhoods shaded by oaks. At its center is a quaint, turn-of-the-century Main Street with dozens of welcoming restaurants, cafes, and shops. The city is modeled after James Oglethorpe’s “Savannah Plan,” with homes built around parklike squares.

The Houses
Brunswick sports a number of Queen Annes, Gothic Revivals, and Second Empires. Homes start at $75,000 for a small fixer-upper and $190,000 for a larger, restored home.

Why Buy Now?
With an expanded marina, new businesses on Main Street, and a progressive, preservation-minded mayor, Brunswick is poised to become a vacation and full-time hot spot. Though overdevelopment has hindered the charms of nearby barrier islands, Brunswick remains largely preserved and refreshingly authentic. “It’s still pristine,” says transplant Julie Martin. “It still feels like a small town, not a tourist trap.”

Last night, in celebration of Memorial Day, the Rotary Club presented the annual Taps at Twilight ceremony. Sam Nunn, former US Senator, was the keynote speaker. The ceremony was lovely, as always, with music from the Golden Isles Community Concert Band and the posting of the colors by the US Marine Corps. Photos below from Roger Peterson, local resident.
